O'Neil auditioned for her third series of Canadian Idol in the early year of 2005, while at high school. Her vocal performance impressed the panel of judges and she was promoted to the final 100th stage. O'Neil was praised highly by the judges. However, she experienced major losses during the Top 10 weeks and Top 9 of the Finals, when she fell into the lowest 3 and 2 spots in both cases. The judges were stunned by this and instructed the crowd to select contestants such as Melissa, who had the strongest singing skills. After giving consistently stellar performances throughout the contest, O'Neil never again finished in the bottom three. O'Neil's performance on the 7th of September, 2005 was so impressive that judge Werner predicted the newspaper headlines. O'Neil beat Rex Goudie and became the third Canadian Idol. O'Neil received a call shortly after her win from Canadian Premier Paul Martin, congratulating on her victory on Canadian Idol.
